Why Should you Pump your Tank???
After several years of use your septic tank can develop a build-up of bottom sludge and floating scum. A build-up of sludge and scum can reduce the effective capacity of your tank. The build-up will cause waste to pass through the tank too fast and the solids will eventually plug the pipes of the absorption area. The microorganisms in the drainfield no longer have an aerobic environment to perform their cleansing action; they become anaerobic and fight to survive. If left untreated the effluent begins to surface on the ground or sewage backs up into your home. At this point your system has failed and a new absorption area would be required.
When Should you Pump your Tank???
The State of Maine recommends that a residential tank under normal useage should be pumped every three to five years. Regular appointments can be scheduled with us at Maine Septic & Pumping. Look for our reminder card in the mail.
